Host Fulbright Scholars for Dinner

GCIV Board Member Phil Handler and his family host Fulbright Scholars for dinner in November 2011.

Host Fulbright Scholars from all over the world next February and March! In February we will be hosting 140 Fulbrighters and the following month, 75 Fulbrighters will be in Atlanta participating in a seminar on Global Health Issues. We’ll need 40-45 dinner hosts in February and 20-25 dinner hosts in March to accommodate both groups, so please save the dates.

Friday, February 1 and Friday, March 1, 2013.

Below is an excerpt from an article written by GCIV Board Member Phil Handler on his experience as a Fulbright Dinner Host.

"Almost a year ago, on November 5, 2011, our family hosted three Fulbright Scholars for dinner in our home. Why am I writing about this now? Because, remarkably, the evening is still being discussed. I asked our high school senior recently what he remembers about that evening that seems to have made a lasting impression..."

For questions about hosting, please contact Emily O’Harris at emily@gciv.org.

The CASIE Speakeasy

On the first Wednesday of the month, the Center for the Advancement and Study of International Education (CASIE) presents a model language lesson and a different language each month at Speakeasy. The rules of the Speakeasy are simple. Instructors prepare a one hour lesson completely in the target language with no use of English. Then participants, usually with little prior study of the language but many multilingual, converse. Japanese, Amharic, Swahili, Dutch, Romanian, Hebrew, American Sign Language, Tagalog, and Latin are currently scheduled for 2012. NOTE: CASIE is currently looking for other instructors, particularly in languages not commonly taught in American schools. This is a great opportunity to promote languages and culture.

For more information, visit www.casieonline.org or email John Wilson.
